R.I.P Jamaica Jerry- You Party Animal :D

Yesterday we got some really sad news. Our friend Jamaica Jerry had passed away on his way home from Zipolite to California.

We met Jerry in 2008 when I took Angel to Mexico for the first time. She was just 6. He told me how he was a retired school teacher and he would ask her little questions to see how she was doing...especially knowing she was being homeschooled.

We all stayed at Posada Esmeralda that year for a while and so we saw him on a regular basis. Later the next year we would run into him here and there and we always followed his posts on Facebook where the man had a gazillion photos. He was always doing this. Giving the thumbs up. :D

This photo was taken at 3 de Diciembre this year. It was Jerry's first night back in Zipolite and he had great timing because it was their 20th Anniversary and I was doing the photography. We had a table and Jerry sat and had a pozole.

After that we kept running into him here and there... Jerry commented that it was odd how everytime he would arrive back in Zipo from being in P.E. or from where ever Angel and I would somehow be there.

When we went to Orale Cafe, Jerry would show up. Funny little encounters ...like maybe God was connecting us because he knew he would be bringing Jerry home soon. :(

Tears are coming right now so it's hard to type.

....

Anyways, on New Year's Day, Angel and I went for nice meal at Orale, it was a special meat pie - and it's a tradition served in Montreal. This day Jerry was there and because it was very busy and we had got a table, Jerry came and sat with us. We had a nice visit and talked about a lot of things. We took photos of the food. Jerry loved to show off the lovely meals at Orale.

And I having made a website and videos for Orale was making a new one...but my camera was acting up. Jerry said his good one had bit the dust too. I am so glad I have this video, I wish I had more.

We all had a really nice time and I am so glad because I have that special memory. Angel is very sad, we both cried alot last night.

Jerry was always so cheerful. He was always busy going somewhere  on his bike but would stop and chat.

He loved his dog, Oso. Poor Oso, he's going to wonder what happened to Jerry. :( but maybe he knows...dogs are smart about these things.

Somehow I feel it's all a mistake...a bad Facebook rumour...that's what I thought at first.

His last post was this.  "Adios Mexico"

I had seen Jerry's post saying he  was coming home.

So I wrote :
Hey Jerry, have a safe trip home. I always cry when I leave Mexico and I feel a little teary just watching you. Silly! Safe Travels amigo Besos y abrazos Tina y Angel

So you can imaging the shock when later I saw this

"I just got the shocking news that Jamaica Jerry died of a heart attack on his way back to CA from Zipolite... I've had the pleasure of being his friend for 7 years, hung out with him at his home in Santa Cruz, at Burning Man, and on bike ri...See More
— with Jamaica Jerry.

One of the last posts Jerry had shared and I had reshared was this. And it was so true of Jerry.

He loved Burning Man. I remember he shared this with us. And it has made us laugh and smile so much.

The man was a party animal that loved life and traveled and shared so much in Facebook. I can not believe how many photos there are of him. Truly amazing.

Well Jerry, it's time to say Good bye, but you are not forgotten and I am sure we will see your spirit in Zipolite. R.I.P.

Cheers!! Saludos!! Besos y Abrazos! Tina y Angel

Sad news, 2 dead and 14 missing from Hurricane Barbara. Thankfully it has downgraded to a Tropical Depression now but there is flooding. I am sure there will be damage on roads and some mud slides further inland.

Hurricane Barbara floods Mexico's southern Pacific coast, kills two

http://worldnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/05/30/18600922-hurricane-barbara-floods-mexicos-southern-pacific-coast-kills-two?lite

"A tropical storm warning was in effect from Salina Cruz in Oaxaca to Pijijiapan in Chiapas state.
Between 6 and 10 inches of rain was expected over eastern Oaxaca through western Chiapas, along with a storm surge of 3 to 5 feet above normal tide levels, the NHC said."

Hurricane Barbara weakens to tropical depression in Mexico

http://www.csmonitor.com/World/Latest-News-Wires/2013/0530/Hurricane-Barbara-weakens-to-tropical-depression-in-Mexico

"Hurricane Barbara drenched a sparsely populated stretch of Mexico's southern Pacific coast with rain Wednesday after making the second-earliest landfall since reliable record-keeping began in 1966. It quickly lost strength over land but not before killing at least two people, including a man identified by local officials as a U.S. surfer."

"Farther to the east, near the landfall area, 14 fishermen who set out to sea Wednesday morning from the town of Tapanatepec had been reported missing, Maza said.
Barbara came ashore with winds of about 75 mph (120 kph) and lost power as it moved inland. By Wednesday night, maximum sustained winds had dropped to 50 mph (85 kph) as the storm slogged northward, but flooding was reported in some areas and remained a threat.
On May 23, the National Hurricane Center had said odds favor a above-normal hurricane season in the eastern Pacific for 2013." Read more here

I am up early this morning as I was very concerned for our friends and family in Zipolite, and surrounding areas. The news is good so far there and I want to thank everyone for the good thoughts and prayers.  I haven't much from Zipolite, just that they were cold.

I saw a video on Facebook that a family member shared of Zipolite on the beach and it was looking very cold and windy and dark.

You must realize they have no heating system like us in Canada. When it's cold and wet and windy here we close the windows and turn up the heat. Also they do not have a lot of warm clothes like we do...I remember one Christmas it actually rained for 3 days and it was damp and chilly. Angel and I were okay because we had fleeces and jeans.  Still we weren't used to it.  Chico teased me and asked me for my jeans because he didn't have any (just shorts) and was really cold!

I know they are not out of the woods yet but it's looking much better.  Please keep them in your prayers. Gracias.

This collection of photos and videos are from our final days in Zipolite in January and February 2013. If you follow my blog http://adventurezinmexico.blogspot.mx/ you will know that my computer broke just after I managed to upload all the videos from Shambhala's Karma Cleansing.

Strangely or maybe not that strange as I guess it was a projection as I said that in January I would stop working on the computer and spend more time enjoying the sunrises.

So that's what happened. Over the next while I spent my morning walking the beach and sometimes up to the Mediation Point.

This is the 3rd of 5 videos...I'm still working on them,...might be more or less. I was able to take some lovely photos and I am happy to share them with you now. Enjoy!!!

Rip Waves- Learn to recognise them!

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2013

I heard today that Zipolite is super quiet again and tourist season is basically over. This is actually a great time to meet the locals and you can get some good rates for sure. It will definitely be quiet so if your looking for solitude, it's there.

One thing I want to mention is be SUPER careful of the waves. This is the time of year when the waves get SUPER BIG. I found this great video online and it talks about rip waves.

It's really good advice so please please listen. Unfortunately while we were in Zipolite this year there were 3 drownings that we know of. It's a terrible thing.

Even Angel and I had a close call right at the beginning of our trip. You can read about it here http://adventurezinmexico.blogspot.mx/2012/09/warning-about-waves.html

Zipolite is a gorgeous beach but  gets some wicked waves so just be careful.

Some other advice, do not drink and go swimming. If you are sober you will have a much better chance of surviving than if you are not at your most alert state.

Watch the flags...if there are any!

Watch where the locals swim. Make sure they are locals.  Many Mexicans that come to the beach on holidays do not know the beach any better than you. They are from the city and many do not know how to swim. Keep an eye open for them and yourself.

Ask the life guards where and when it's safe and locate the life guard station.

Watch your children carefully. I suggest using a boogie board at all times.

Gosh I'm missing Shambhala. Almost every morning for the last month I was there I would go up early and spend a little quiet time. Often before or at sunrise. It was so peaceful. I thank God for those beautiful precious moments.

I was fortunate to create some great videos and watching them now brings great peace and tranquility to me. I hope they do the same for you. You can see them here on Shambhala's Website that I made for Gloria. http://shambhalavision.blogspot.ca/p/videos-photos.html

A Solution to Hand Washing Clothes

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2012
zipolita@gmail.com
http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com
http://twitter.com/#!/zipolita @zipolita
http://gplus.to/zipolita Google+

The whole time we were in Zipolite (6 months) I hand washed my clothes. Thankfully the sun was strong most of the time and they smell so lovely when they dry in the sun. Some days it did rain and then that could be a problem.

When |I fell and hurt my hand I was really messed up. It was quite a while before I could wash them and then I had an even bigger pile to do. (Note the splint on my hand in the video.) Mostly we had light clothing so it's not that hard to wring them but my jean shorts and some of Angel's shorts and skorts were hard and well just the number of items it took it's toll on my hands. Not to mention that I have a history of tendonitis so my hands hate the wringing part.

One day I hope to live off the grid. Here is a fabulous idea.
http://www.thedogood.net/health/2013/03/pedal-powered-washing-machine-costs-less-than-40-to-make/#.UVPAwVeP7ON

I know that this could come in handy for the people of Zipolite because when the tourists arrive there's a lot of laundry. When my landlady's washer broke it was really hard. It's $300 just for a small washer - an old fashioned kind, nothing fancy, so if they could rig this up, I am sure it would help.

Note, this is not how they do it, they use the cement basin beneath this tub but I am no go at that so I just wash it in the tub, rinse in another, wash, wring,  rinse, wash, wring, rinse....and then rinse, wring, hang to dry.

Well these took a while to get done. When my computer broke in Mexico and then my camera started looking like an earthquake was happening every time I took a photo, well I was sad. At least I had a backup camera but it's wasn't as good.

So when we went to San Cristobal I was using this camera and it's just not the best quality. So I apologize.

We left from Huatulco in the evening and arrived like 7am in the morning. It was super chilly having been living at the beach for the last 4 months. And we only brought flip flops because I knew during the day it would warm up and well we were only staying one day.

So here is our one day. We were also really low on funds so we couldn't do much shopping, which was sad because...this is the place to SHOP!!

Still we had fun, we arrived and went to La Git de Sol and got a room. Then went for hot chocolate and a treat. Then we wandered to the market and they were just setting up.  I bought Angel a few treats. It was a grey day so it took a long time to warm up. After a couple hours we went back the room and slept. It was cold but they put LOTS of blankets on the bed so it's nice.

In the late afternoon we walked back down to the Zocalo and to the market and then back home. We bought milk and chocolate and some lovely little baked treats and went back to the Le Git de Sol to enjoy.

We went to bed early as the next day we were taking the 7:30 am bus to Palenque.

Well it was the best birthday EVER! I don't know how it all came about because I had planned it differently but we ended up in Palenque on my birthday.

I couldn't have planned it better. It just all came together. Angel, my cherub, she got the bow & arrow she had been dreaming about since the start of our trip.

I managed to video it all. It was touch and go because my good camera broke and my computer broke but luckily I had a back up camera.

So here we are in Palenque, checking out her new bow and arrow that she bought just as we came arrived.

Note: we walked all the way from El Panchan.

We had taken the bus and decided to walk because I wasn't sure how much that bow would cost and we were very low on pesos.

As it was it all turned out fantastic, later we went for a lovely meal at the restaurant and then the next day we went to Agua Azul

Even though it rained it was great. Keep watching as I add more videos. :D

Well, Well, Well looky here, Zipolite got a big write up on Yahoo! GOOD FOR THEM!!
So happy that people are spreading the news about this Super Cool Place :D

http://news.yahoo.com/laid-back-beach-lost-time-zipolite-mexico-154141376.html

"A sleepy town with one main street and no ATMs, Zipolite (pronounced ZEE-poe-LEE-tay) is one of many tiny coastal pueblos that dot the Pacific in Mexico's Southern state of Oaxaca. Stretching from Puerto Escondido to Huatulco, the region is sometimes called the Oaxaca Riviera."

One thing...nobody anywhere should leave their things on the beach unattended. In Zipolite, it is most likely the waves that will sneak up and take them but petty theft is an issue in todo la mundo. (everywhere in the world!!)

I tried to help as much as I could by making this video when we arrived in September. It was still really quiet all the time we were there...so it's great place to chill just like the above story says.  I thought the article was really well written. Wish I could write like that. :) But it doesn't give credit to the author ???

Here's my video for Agua Azul. I should edit it some more but I have like 20 videos to edit and load and well I have other projects too...so here it is... when I re-edit later I'll let you know.

It rained the day we went. I have been there 3x before and it was sunny, but this time it just didn't happen. I was really disappointed and felt like cancelling but then what else was there to do...and I am so glad we went. It's a beautiful drive and we went to Mishol.ha and I will show that in a bit.

We met some super lovely people and had dinner with them that night. So much fun.

Since it was raining so much it made the falls more powerful and it's not cold. We were just cold because we had been to Mishol.ha and walked under the RAGING waterfall and got a shower. LOL!!
