Amber
Woman! That's me. Ha! Ha! o Ja! Ja! Aqui en Mexico. This is my first
Amber Carving. I want more!! Lots more. I want to be the Amber
Woman/Amber Mujer and carve lots and lots of amber. It was fun! Tricky
and a real learning process, from carving it to photographing it.
So grateful to my friend Stacy for gifting me with the amber and to the ancestors for helping me with the whole process. I also want to thank Tawx'sin Yexwulla /Aaron Nelson-Moody for sharing some of his teachings and mentoring and enlightening me in carving and many other important things related not only to his Coast Salish culture and mine but other things in regards to Indigenous issues, Ceremonies, Reconciliation and Women and Children and opening my eyes where I was blind. Also thank to Shane Pointe for sharing all his beautiful words and teachings. Gracias to Xwalacktun & Yogui for inspiring me and thank you to everyone especially all the beautiful WOMAN/MUJERS who have supported, inspired and loved me through this learning/healing process and my journey.

Change of Plans- Off to School we go!!
Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2013

So a change of plans. Change is good!! I am going back to school. It's been 13 years since I been a program with exams and where lots of studying is involved. Yikes! But it's all good.
It's what I prayed for, meditated for and projected. I was sooo happy yesterday you couldn't wipe the smile off my face if you tried! That is when I got the final okay!! So I am in a deep state of gratitude!
It's a good program at a great school here in Vancouver. It's Emily Carr! And the program is funded. It was quite the odd situation as it's only funded for people who have very low or no income.
Sadly that's me.
I've tried. I think you can see that, I have tried with my blogging, my photography, my web design, my social media, my videos, my book publishing. Yet it's not enough. I don't have quite the right skills the industry is calling for. I was stuck. I couldn't upgrade because I didn't have the funds.
Now though, I have been very blessed and this will all change. I will be learning more Wordpress, using current design applications like the latest Adobe programs and I'll be learning how to make apps. And that's a biggy.
Angel knows more about apps than me. I asked her...so if someone wanted to know what are apps and what are they for? What would you tell them.. and she launched into all this.
1. games
2. tips
3. games w/tips for real life gaming. -I didn't know this :(
4. most important- they have to be fun- or if they are boring everyone will uninstall (smart kid!)
5. Cost- Free- $1 or $2 - paid apps are usually $1 she tells me.
So what else do I need to know.
Well she says...
Will it have physics? What will the controls look like and where will they be?
And she goes on...
So see I have to catch up. I have to go back and learn because I am only 51 and in Canada we have to work to 67 to get retirement...I have a long ways to go and I have to take care of my girl. I want the best for her that I can give. I want to learn this new technology and use it in a "green way!"
Something cool happened. Have you heard of the GREEN SCHOOL? http://www.greenschool.org/ I saw something on CBC about it and then googled it and found a Tedtalks video and learned a lot more.
I would love for Angel to go there. Wouldn't it be so cool for us to go there for a year and then go to Zipolite and try and start one there.
Well that's my new dream/goal.
So until then we are both in school. Angel has to go to school if I go. So we are school kids together now and unfortunately we won't be going to Mexico this year. Well not until at least March...when my program ends and then only if miracles happen and we have the funds.
We sure will miss it, but Angel did want to spend Christmas here, so we are all getting our wishes to come true.
Isn't life AMAZING!!
Anyways, I just wanted to share that I put some little support thingys on the right side there. Since I will be super busy with the program and they really discourage you from working while in the program as they want you fully committed...things are going to be tough...when aren't they..right!
But at least after this program things will get better.
Anyways,
- if you like our blog,
- if the videos made you smile,
- if the photos and music triggered wonderful memories or inspired your travel bug
then could you please share the love and support us and treat us to something. (See right sidebar)
We would be so very appreciative and we will definitely give you a shout out!!
Okay so that's the big news. If your heading to Mexico, especially Oaxaca and Zipolite, ENJOY!! Have a wonderful time, think a good thought for us while you are there and say hola to our friends. Almost everyone knows Angel ;) Please send our love and tell them we miss them. Here's a list of the people who definitely know us and if you visit them please let them know. Gracias. http://zipolitazstudioz.blogspot.ca/p/clientz.html

Here's my video for Agua Azul. I should edit it some more but I have like 20 videos to edit and load and well I have other projects too...so here it is... when I re-edit later I'll let you know.
It rained the day we went. I have been there 3x before and it was sunny, but this time it just didn't happen. I was really disappointed and felt like cancelling but then what else was there to do...and I am so glad we went. It's a beautiful drive and we went to Mishol.ha and I will show that in a bit.
We met some super lovely people and had dinner with them that night. So much fun.
Since it was raining so much it made the falls more powerful and it's not cold. We were just cold because we had been to Mishol.ha and walked under the RAGING waterfall and got a shower. LOL!!
Agua Azul and Mishol.ha -- Definitely worth a visit rain or shine.

Travel Tips # 4
Things to Consider when Travelling Long-term with a Child!
So you want to run away for the winter, or just take your kid somewhere and expose them to a different culture, well here are some things to consider :
No TV- I LOVE THIS! I hate commercials, the brain rot that children are exposed to these days makes me crazy...Buy this or you'll stink, Buy this or you'll be ugly, Buy this or you'll be stupid, Buy this or you won't be COOL ...the list goes on and on.... I just love going 5 months with pretty much no TV, I mean you probably can't avoid it completely but you can try. And for adults I believe it's so healthy not beening bombarded everyday with some horrible thing that's happening in your town...or in the world...Yes it's good to be aware, but sometimes it's just so overwhelming you just become numb and/or depressed. That's not to say you won't see News in Mexico and other places but at least you'll get a bit of a break.
Limited Internet- When we travelled we probably spent 3 hours a week on the web...sometimes less, and these days we are all so connected to the web, when the computer breaks in our house, withdrawl sets in...pretty sad...but I think it's a reality in some many homes these days.

Travel Tip # 2 Adventurez in Mexico

Travel Tip # 2
Go Overland - Ride Buses or local transportation whenever possible, opposed to planes. Buses in Mexico are Excellent. Their service is much better than Canadian Greyhound. Their ticketing service is excellent and Greyhound would do well to adapt it. Also their security. I love taking the buses in Mexico.
Give Right - I always made an attempt to buy from small stores and spread the wealth around. Lonely Planet recommends you donate to schools, and clinics and avoid giving hand-outs to children in order not to encourage begging. We used to give the children pretty photos.
Buy Local-Eat in Local Restaurants, buy from local small stores.
Use cold showers - avoid hot showers that use wood heat.
Pick up your litter, and if you pack it in, pack it out!
Be Respectful! Especially of local traditions and customs.
Use appropriate attire when visiting churches and local villages
Ask Questions! Learn the customs and ask how not to make mistakes the other tourists do.

Travel Tip # 1- Adventurez in Mexico
Tweet
Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011
http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com
Cultural Differences :
Here are some tips to help with the above:
* Kids hate cold showers - a trick we worked out was to fill a couple of water bottles with water and then put them in the sun for a few hours, buy a small dish tub(or the biggest you can find) and pour the water in and viola, you have a mini warm bath for your child.
*You must rinse the salt water off. We ended up a with a nasty rash from the heat and the salt and all the tan from the back of Angel's leg left and was all pink and raw and exposed to the sun.
This happened for 2 reasons-
1) We forgot to shower off after visiting a beach an hour from home
2) She didn't like wearing cream, she hated the feeling
People actually thought she had El Hongos which translates to fungi
But a Oaxacan doctor told us she was allergic to the sun and his advice was
The second year she was accustomed to the heat, and I was more prepared and we had less issues.
For little babies, my friend recommended corn starch...she used it for her little boy and it worked great.
She recommended to a very earthy mom but she didn't want to use it, because of breathing issues it might cause. We couldn't figure that one out, as the baby had a terrible heat rash and had been playing in dusty sand...so go figure.
On that note...travelling with very young children ...I wasn't able to return to Mexico until Angel was 6. I believe everything happens for a reason. I just don't know how I would have managed the diapers, putting things in mouth, buggies/strollers, all that with a little baby...those things are challenging enough in Canada...so please keep this in mind. It's different if your Mexican and this is your culture, but as an outsider it's something your going to want to consider very seriously.
Mosquitos
- Angel does much better with mosquitos than I do...I am allergic and must use Off Crema -which they charge a fortune for $6-8 a bottle
Sunblock is also very expensive $12- $14 a bottle and when your there 6 months, this can really eat up your budget.

- No drinking water from taps- this includes brushing your teeth
- Use Bottled water
- Washing dishes, make sure they are completely dry before use.
- Use microdyn to wash all fruits and veggies
- No baths
- Basically your camping for 5 or 6 months
- Cold Showers
- Throwing toilet paper in a basket and not down the toilet

But a Oaxacan doctor told us she was allergic to the sun and his advice was
- at the beginning put a tiny amount of hydrocortizone on it
- then Almond oil in her bath (that's where the dishtub came in)
- sunblock(Personally I don't like it, I think it has a lot of chemicals, so we used it in moderation)
