Sad news, 2 dead and 14 missing from Hurricane Barbara. Thankfully it has downgraded to a Tropical Depression now but there is flooding. I am sure there will be damage on roads and some mud slides further inland.

Hurricane Barbara floods Mexico's southern Pacific coast, kills two

"A tropical storm warning was in effect from Salina Cruz in Oaxaca to Pijijiapan in Chiapas state.
Between 6 and 10 inches of rain was expected over eastern Oaxaca through western Chiapas, along with a storm surge of 3 to 5 feet above normal tide levels, the NHC said."

Hurricane Barbara weakens to tropical depression in Mexico

http://www.csmonitor.com/World/Latest-News-Wires/2013/0530/Hurricane-Barbara-weakens-to-tropical-depression-in-Mexico

"Hurricane Barbara drenched a sparsely populated stretch of Mexico's southern Pacific coast with rain Wednesday after making the second-earliest landfall since reliable record-keeping began in 1966. It quickly lost strength over land but not before killing at least two people, including a man identified by local officials as a U.S. surfer."

"Farther to the east, near the landfall area, 14 fishermen who set out to sea Wednesday morning from the town of Tapanatepec had been reported missing, Maza said.
Barbara came ashore with winds of about 75 mph (120 kph) and lost power as it moved inland. By Wednesday night, maximum sustained winds had dropped to 50 mph (85 kph) as the storm slogged northward, but flooding was reported in some areas and remained a threat.
On May 23, the National Hurricane Center had said odds favor a above-normal hurricane season in the eastern Pacific for 2013." Read more here

I am up early this morning as I was very concerned for our friends and family in Zipolite, and surrounding areas. The news is good so far there and I want to thank everyone for the good thoughts and prayers.  I haven't much from Zipolite, just that they were cold.

I saw a video on Facebook that a family member shared of Zipolite on the beach and it was looking very cold and windy and dark.

You must realize they have no heating system like us in Canada. When it's cold and wet and windy here we close the windows and turn up the heat. Also they do not have a lot of warm clothes like we do...I remember one Christmas it actually rained for 3 days and it was damp and chilly. Angel and I were okay because we had fleeces and jeans.  Still we weren't used to it.  Chico teased me and asked me for my jeans because he didn't have any (just shorts) and was really cold!

I know they are not out of the woods yet but it's looking much better.  Please keep them in your prayers. Gracias.

This collection of photos and videos are from our final days in Zipolite in January and February 2013. If you follow my blog http://adventurezinmexico.blogspot.mx/ you will know that my computer broke just after I managed to upload all the videos from Shambhala's Karma Cleansing.

Strangely or maybe not that strange as I guess it was a projection as I said that in January I would stop working on the computer and spend more time enjoying the sunrises.

So that's what happened. Over the next while I spent my morning walking the beach and sometimes up to the Mediation Point.

This is the 3rd of 5 videos...I'm still working on them,...might be more or less. I was able to take some lovely photos and I am happy to share them with you now. Enjoy!!!

Rip Waves- Learn to recognise them!

I heard today that Zipolite is super quiet again and tourist season is basically over. This is actually a great time to meet the locals and you can get some good rates for sure. It will definitely be quiet so if your looking for solitude, it's there.

One thing I want to mention is be SUPER careful of the waves. This is the time of year when the waves get SUPER BIG. I found this great video online and it talks about rip waves.

It's really good advice so please please listen. Unfortunately while we were in Zipolite this year there were 3 drownings that we know of. It's a terrible thing.

Even Angel and I had a close call right at the beginning of our trip. You can read about it here http://adventurezinmexico.blogspot.mx/2012/09/warning-about-waves.html

Zipolite is a gorgeous beach but  gets some wicked waves so just be careful.

Some other advice, do not drink and go swimming. If you are sober you will have a much better chance of surviving than if you are not at your most alert state.

Watch the flags...if there are any!

Watch where the locals swim. Make sure they are locals.  Many Mexicans that come to the beach on holidays do not know the beach any better than you. They are from the city and many do not know how to swim. Keep an eye open for them and yourself.

Ask the life guards where and when it's safe and locate the life guard station.

Watch your children carefully. I suggest using a boogie board at all times.
