So we're home...

It's a whole new kind of culture shock when you return to reality after nearly 6 months in Southern Mexico. Zipolite, Oaxaca to be exact.

Angel and I were hesitant and amazed when we could put our toothbrushes under the tap and brush our teeth. (Think about that for a second and give thanks if you can. It's something that most people take for granted....)

The second crazy thing that made us grateful is you can actually put the paper down the toilet. Jajajajajaj!! Translation: Hahahahahah!! but it's not funny. It's something that you don't think about unless it's your reality in Zipolite or most of Mexico. It was in Mexico city(also known as D.F. District Federal) that we could actually flush it and it was a strange feeling after you have trained yourself not to for the last six months.

We arrived home super late the other night but all went smooth. We met some really great people on the planes and waiting for the planes. Angel enjoyed taking her shoes off through the customs, she had waited anxiously all day for it ;) Silly kid.

It's cold, ...not really but being climatized to the heat and humidity for the last 6 months we've got to adjust.

At least going to Oaxaca first and then D.F. helped a bit as they are chillier and dry....that's what's getting us too...it's super dry. Need to remember use lots of oils or lotions if your in a similar situation.

It's a sad day today, I lost a friend today. Reality sets in.

It was a grey and dreary day today, but we had Oaxacan hot chocolate and movies to watch. Good day to chill.

As soon as the weather warms I've got lots of plans to promote my videos. I have got some cool new Oaxaca shirts and my friend gave me a great jacket...I'll show you later.

I've got lots of videos to put up and other work to do.

Today I'm going to give thanks for life and for being safely home and for my beautiful child, for family and friends. I give thanks for drinking water from taps and the other daily things that we take for granted. Gracias Dios, and all the angels and positive powers that be for helping us through our next journey. : D

Where in the World is Zipolite???

If you don't know where Zipolite is, here's the Google Map to help you. It's located in the state of Oaxaca, about 1 hour north of Huatulco and 1 hour south of Puerto Escondido.  You can fly into Huatulco and take a taxi to here or grab a bus to Pochutla and then get a collectivo or caminoneta. If it is your first time, I'd take a taxi, it's like $50 I think. It's normally $30 from Huatulco but I think they get cha at the airport. Anyhow you will arrive safe and it's only about a short trip, just a bit windy.

Otherwise if your a seasoned traveller, fly into Mexico City and bus to Oaxaca City. You can catch a van from there down to Pochutla and then take the a collectivo or caminoneta to Zipolita.

Of course you can take a taxi from Pochutla too. I always do the first time as I have too much luggage, no matter how little I try to bring, I'm so tired.

There are some good flights on Flight Centre with Sunwing to Huatulco coming up so check them out!!

All is well in Mexico. If you have ever wanted to come to Mexico, now is the year. If you fly into Mexico City you can get a good deal on airfare. Bus are better than Canada and they are really economical.

We’ve come from San Juan Copala (in Oaxaca state), seeking peace, because we’re also suffering violence and injustice,” said Mariana, a 21-year-old from the Triqui tribe, wearing indigenous clothing.

The march started Thursday about 45 miles from the capital in the tourist city of Cuernavaca, which has been rocked by drug-related violence and where in March suspected hitmen killed the son of writer Javier Sicilia, who is heading the march. Read More Here

“We’ve had it with this terrible government that goes unpunished. We want peace,” said Araceli Vazquez, 60 years old, as he held up an improvised placard with his demands.

April was the most violent month yet in Calderon’s fight, with 1,402 deaths, Milenio newspaper reported. Read More Here

Helped by friends, 49-year-old Carlos Castro held up a large blanket with photos of his wife and two daughters. They disappeared one January night in Xalapa, in the east of the country, and he has not heard anything of them since.

"I've not found any other way to protest, nobody has spoken to me and the authorities know nothing about them," he said. "The idea of coming here with this blanket is to send a message to the people that have them. So they give them back to me."

Quiet Cinco de Mayo

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

We celebrated a very quiet little Cinco de Mayo.

We had a lovely dinner, sole with lots of lemon, carrots, taco chips, salsa, and to drink Orange Juice.(I wanted a Cerveza but it just didn't happen)

For dessert we melted left over Chocolate Easter eggs, and added a little milk, then we ate a whole container of Strawberries dipped in the Chocolate!! Yum!!

That was it, we were tired, we've been doing a lot of walking.

This video is from a few years back, I need to turn it the right way, but to busy at the moment, it will have to do. Angel wore her dress out yesterday, with black pants underneath and a coat, because it's been darn cold. We had so much fun with the cherry blossoms, they are just about to fall, so we we standing under the branches, making snow with the petals.

I love this time of year, but as I said, it's much colder than normal. Happy Friday Everyone, enjoy those blossoms, they'll be gone soon if we get alot of rain and wind. :(

Hope you all enjoyed your Cinco De Mayo!

Feliz Cinco de Mayo

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

Happy Cinco de Mayo Everyone!!

 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinco_de_Mayo

Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for "fifth of May") is a holiday held on May 5. It is celebrated nationwide in the United States and regionally in Mexico, primarily in the state of Puebla.[1][2][3][4]

The date is observed in the United States as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride,[5] and to commemorate the cause of freedom and democracy during the first years of the American Civil War.[6]

In the state of Puebla, the date is observed to commemorate the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza SeguĆn.[7][8]

Contrary to widespread popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day,[9][10] the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico, which occurs on September 16th.

I LOVE ACAPULCO!!

I don't know who created this video, but really like it.

(Acapulco station balnéaire tres connue pour sa magnifique baie et les plongeurs de la mort qui plongent des falaises de plus de ving cinq metres de hauteur ( english ) Acapulco resort famous for its beautiful bay and the divers who dive cliffs death of over twenty five meters in height ( deutsch ) Acapulco Beach Resort berühmt für seine schönen Bucht und die Taucher, tauchen Klippen Tod von über 2005 Metern Höhe)

Acapulco holds a SPECIAL place in my heart. The first time I ever visited was when I left my job from the cruiselines as a photographer. They cruiseship took me to the airport and basically made sure I was getting on that plane. I was nervous but it's a lovely airport and I had no issues and there used to be a restaurant called Wings, and the ladies were so nice.

Then I returned later, when I wanted a change from visiting Puerto Vallarta. I had been to Zipolite only once and only a day and I wanted to check it out more. My friend had told me wonderful stories, and so the easiest way was to fly into Acapulco. I totally forgot I had been to the airport years before and when I arrived, well it was like coming home.

Acapulco has always been like that for me. I don't know why, it's a big city, so maybe there that connection as I live in Vancouver and it's a big city, but there's so much more. It's magical, the people, the buses, and then miracles that have happened.

I've posted those stories before, about not being able to find a room and then an "angel" called Gabriel found me a $12 room. I was at the end of my journey and just needed to stay one more night and well it all turned out wonderful.

And how once the taxi driver came all the way back after dropping me off at the bus to bring my Spanish dictionary I had left in his cab.

Truely wonderful people have helped us here. Like I said, I love Acapulco. I pray that God and all his Angels smile down on Acapulco and help it through it troubles.

I really like this video. It's inspired me to go back and remake my videos, make them into a film like the original plan. Wish me luck.

Diego Rivera

Diego Rivera- Wikipedia
Diego MarĆa de la Concepción Juan Nepomuceno Estanislao de la Rivera y Barrientos Acosta y RodrĆguez (December 8, 1886 – November 24, 1957) was a prominent Mexican painter born in Guanajuato, Guanajuato, an active communist, and husband of Frida Kahlo (1929–1939 and 1940–1954). His large wall works in fresco helped establish the Mexican Mural Renaissance. Between 1922 and 1953, Rivera painted murals among others in Mexico City, Chapingo, Cuernavaca, San Francisco, Detroit, and New York City.[1] In 1931, a retrospective exhibition of his works was held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

Diego Rivera was born in Guanajuato, Guanajuato, to a well-to-do family. Rivera was descended, on his mother's side, from Jews who converted to Roman Catholicism,[2][3] and, on his father's side, from Spanish nobility. Diego had a twin brother named Carlos, who died two years after they were born.[4] From the age of ten, Rivera studied art at the Academy of San Carlos in Mexico City. He was sponsored to continue study in Europe by Teodoro A. Dehesa MƩndez, the governor of the State of Veracruz.
