If You Sell Off Paradise

πŸŒΏπŸ’” If You Sell Off Paradise, It’s No Longer Paradise

Reflections on Punta Colorada and the Fight to Protect Puerto Escondido

I haven’t been to Puerto Escondido in about 25 years — not really.
Sure, I passed through it many times between 1990 and 2002, changing buses on my way to Zipolite, where my heart truly feels at home. Over the years, I got to know Mazunte, Huatulco, La Ventanilla… these magical places that hold so much beauty, culture, and soul. Places that offered peace, connection, and inspiration for a young mom and artist searching for a different kind of life.

But even back then, we all knew — when that big highway came, so would the trouble.

We whispered it like a warning… “They’ll want a piece of it all. And they won’t stop until it’s gone.”

And now, I’m reading about what’s happening in Punta Colorada, the last green lung of Puerto Escondido — and my heart aches. πŸ’”

There’s conflict between the local leaders, rumors swirling, and political games being played. But beyond the noise, what matters is this: they are trying to urbanize and sell off something that belongs to everyone.

That land, that coastline, that living, breathing ecosystem — is not a product. Not a business opportunity. Not a development zone. It’s sacred.

The community has responded powerfully through the Salvemos Colorada movement. And they’ve made their intentions beautifully clear:

Punta Colorada is not for sale. It is to be defended.
It must remain green, wild, and free — accessible to all.

I haven’t been there in years, but I’ve been watching. Listening. And remembering.

I’ve seen and heard the sadness that’s crept in. The hotels rising. The prices pushing locals out. The destruction hidden behind tourism ads. The broken promises. The trauma of “progress.”

And I can tell you this from the deepest place in my heart:
If you sell off paradise, it’s no longer paradise.

You can pave it, package it, and profit from it — but what you lose is far greater. You lose the soul. The spirit. The silence. The magic.

🌊 So I stand with everyone fighting to protect Punta Colorada.
Even from afar, I send my voice, my love, and my solidarity.

To the fishers, surfers, families, and defenders — thank you.
To the developers and politicians — back off.

And to anyone reading this:
Let’s keep this place sacred for future generations.
Because once it's gone — it's gone forever.

With hope and fire,
