The coastal community of La Ventanilla, Oaxaca, recently lost one of its most iconic animals — Amarillo, the second largest crocodile in its natural lagoon. Amarillo was a symbol of the local ecosystem and highly valued by residents.
Between May 20 and 23, during a scientific workshop, Amarillo was captured without the proper permits and underwent surgery. Although released afterward, the crocodile was weakened and later developed an infection that caused its death on August 5.
The community is deeply upset and demands justice. They also plan to organize to prevent unauthorized interventions that could harm local wildlife in the future. La Ventanilla is an important ecological reserve protecting mangroves, birds, and many wild species.
